About the Live Camera Project

A budget-friendly, low-bandwidth approach to live web streaming.

📷 About the Project

This live camera was created as a small independent project to explore whether a reliable web-streaming system could be built using affordable, readily available hardware while keeping internet bandwidth, power consumption and running costs as low as practical.

The aim was to produce a simple, budget-friendly solution capable of providing a continuous outdoor view without requiring expensive specialist equipment, high-speed broadband or a dedicated recording system.

⚙️ How It Works

The system is based around a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W — a compact computer costing around £20 — together with a Raspberry Pi camera module.

It captures the video and sends it directly to an online streaming service using a carefully controlled resolution, frame rate and bitrate.

These settings provide a useful live image while using as little internet bandwidth and electrical power as possible.

Custom software manages the stream, checks the equipment and internet connection, and attempts to restore the feed automatically following temporary network or service interruptions.

🏠 Host a Camera

We are always interested in finding additional suitable locations from which to operate a live camera.

The requirements are deliberately simple:

  • An unobstructed view through a suitable window
  • Access to a Wi-Fi connection
  • A nearby power socket

The equipment is compact and designed to operate with minimal power consumption and internet usage. No specialist networking equipment, high-speed broadband connection or outdoor camera installation is normally required.

Potential locations could include community buildings, cafés, clubs, visitor centres, offices or other properties with an interesting public-facing view.

🔒 Privacy and Recording

This is a live-streaming system only.

No video or audio recordings are stored on the camera, the Raspberry Pi or any other equipment at the camera location.

The online stream is configured so that YouTube does not retain or publish a recording or archived copy of the livestream.

🌦️ Weather and Tide Information

Weather forecasts and tide information may be displayed alongside the live feed. This information is obtained from external data services and is provided only as a general guide.

Weather forecasts, tide times and other displayed information may be delayed, incomplete or inaccurate. Actual local conditions can change quickly and may differ from both the live image and the information shown.

⚠️ Important Safety Information

The livestream, weather forecast and tide information must not be used to make decisions concerning personal safety or participation in coastal, water-based or outdoor activities.

A camera view cannot show every local hazard or accurately represent factors such as currents, water temperature, wind strength, wave conditions, visibility, underwater obstacles or rapidly changing weather.

Anyone using the area must make their own assessment of the conditions, consider their ability and experience, and consult appropriate official forecasts, warnings and safety information before making a decision.

The live feed and accompanying information are provided for general interest only. Responsibility for assessing conditions and making safe decisions remains with the individual.
